In the first segment of “Table Talk Tuesdays,” we will be discussing what it means to be an Oreo: to be black on the outside and “white” on the inside. I will be recapping my workplace experience, where I encountered this Oreo notion. It was when a customer told me, “I sound white.” Food for Thought: what makes us sound black?

Telling a black person they “sound white” is very ignorant. Not only are you ignorant if you say this but you also lack knowledge if you stereotype a group of people by the way they speak. Black people are very educated and to think that we still live in a world where we are viewed as anything less is disgusting. No one is trying to sound white! Just because I am a black educated sister and that threatens you does not mean you have to be ignorant. And that’s on Periodt!!!
These customers are getting way out of line lol. I personally don‘t like when someone tells a black person they “sound white” because there isn’t one way to sound for our people. I wouldn’t even categorize sounding white with intelligence because there are people who use the lingo from their neighborhoods and have the strongest accents, but are some of the most intelligent people we know.
